The turtle shouldn't sweat it (do turtles sweat? don't think so.. anyway..) because speed is a relative thing (just ask Einstein). The turtle can always get a job down at the snail park giving rides. These guys will be begging him to slow down to a respectable speed. And just wait till this tyke grows up.. he'll have all the girls, once his Rep gets around that his love making is slow and easy and not a race to the finish line. Anyway, excellent fable Mere. Very true, the only speed race the turtle could possibly win would be falling off a cliff. His smooth shell would give him an edge over the furry rabbits air resistance. He'd go splatt many milliseconds before that hare got smushed. Cool story and very delightful. Bravo and hugs from Dave :^)

This is a great and professionally told story! I always found the moral of the original tale slightly suspectable and so I'm glad the rabbit did make it here! The only thing I don't agree with you: War and Peace. For me it's the only Russian classical that is NOT boring :-D

LOL...as long as the Rabbit doesn't get any Trix, we're good. :D (you do know why he can't have any, right?)

Live fast, die young ? the turtle will out-LUST the jack-rabbit any day, take it from Eric Clapton...slow hand, for all you LOVERS out there. BTW have you heard of the Russian fable about the Fox and the (sour) grapes ? Another fine fractured fable fabulously formulated for fun ! LOL & ~Cheers~ :o)

Reminds me of the part in the movie Hoodwinked where the woodsman is chopping down trees and one lands next to some turtles then they say "Run!" and start moving in slow motion. ROFL great story!

Speed is overrated as a danger. It only comes into play after the collision has taken place. Until that time the potential in a near miss is overestimated. So the turtle with it's hard shell and ability to stick it's neck out on a sunny day has a really nice life. I get teh moral but now I have forgotten the point. There was a point wasn't there?!! Meredith, you did just try to make a point, didn't you? Now, where are my glasses?

This kind of reminds me of the sort of turnaround to be found in James Thurber's "Fables For Our Time", particularly the Red Riding Hood spoof. In it, when the little girl discovers the wolf in granny's bed, she pulls an automatic pistol out of her basket and shoots the beast dead because "a wolf does not look any more like your grandmother than the Metro-Goldwyn lion looks like Calvin Coolidge" and "It is not so easy to fool little girls nowadays as it used to be." Great story, Meredith.

A really cute story, sweety. I've always been on the side of the underdog. The one that always loses. So I feel sorry for the turtle that can't keep up. Poor baby. Love the story. Huggs...Silkylady...

Great imaginative and "world wise" re-invention of this tale is a lot of fun to read! Hmmm makes me think of the politician and the voter!

LOL! I knew the end would be changed as it happens on your fables of dubious morals. Great story. Hmmm... I wonder if this Rip Van Winkle is based on any real person... 8-)

I love the "larceny in his heart" line. It's just what I'd expect him to do. Glad that his cheating didn't pay off. Very funny fable and much more believeable than the original.
