Hi All, I started out using Bryce, Poser, Photoshop and every other arty program I could get my hands on back in the early 90's but sort of dropped off doing much these past few years. I spend 40+ hours a week in front of a computer at work and somehow tinkering at home just lost it's appeal. But this past july, in the face of my 40th birthday, my need to "get creative again" got the better of me and I am back! I have resolved to make one publishable artwork per day. I did this because I know from experience that without some sort of deadline I tend to overwork pieces to the point where I won't publish them because they irritate me (and they never will be "perfect"). I don't expect that I get a masterpiece every day but I feel pretty good about what I have done these past few months. Occasionally I go back and rework an older image so I always welcome feedback, especially any suggestions for improvement.
Here are my personal favorites in my gallery, in no particular order:

That is imo a huge leap in lighting realism all in one shot. I don't know if you intended for the composition to be so dark up top e.g. maybe it's at night - might give some visual cue like stars/moon to fill in a bit of that black - but the ground shadowing looks really snappy and crisp. If you can put yourself into that scene, where is the light coming from? Are the characters running under a streetlight? Then the big spot is okay, although you might want to put some prop in the scene to give the viewer something to attach the light source to in their head. Is it moonlight? Then you might want an Infinite (like the sun). I think you got the trick of putting some light on the "dark" side of the characters pretty well, that has been really irritating and hard for me.

Thanks Pjz99 - I decided to go back to basics and add a light at a time until I liked it. I was kind of surprised when the second light did the trick. I would say the light is a street lamp or something because it is much to concentrated to be moonlight. I was having a little trouble where the light hit the backdrop (its a multiplane cyclorama) so I kept it minimal. I just tried it with the infinite and it totally ruins the mood. Agh, lights are so frustrating! But I'm getting there, one light at a time, LOL.

Dear Kiera, First, this is so adorable! I love all your "cartoon" like characters and suspect this is the sort of thing that a pair of "snowkids" would do!! Second, on the lighting, I think the lighting on this is very good! I think good lighting must fit the context of the scene. If you are doing a "studio" picture, then you might have a number of lights because photographers use a number of lights. For an outdoor scene, you usually just have one - the sun or the moon. So I always try to see the scene in a full context to figure out where my primary shadow producing light or lights are going to be. However, because of our atmosphere, there is always going to be some diffused ambient light coming from all directions so that even if a character is in deep shadow, the are still partically illuminated. So in addition to the primary shadow light, I usually have lots of non shadow lights at a low intensity to fill in that diffuse effect. The more of these your use, the "smoother" the diffuse light. Typically, I've got 3 to 5, but might have as many as a dozen or more - all at maybe 10 to 20 percent illumination. Super fun picture of adorable characters!!! Love, Meredith
