Description

The second set of landings in 2316 showed that Ardelion is even more unusual than first thought. One of the least known features is that all the "higher" lifeforms are more akin to colonies of single celled lifeforms than they are to plants and animals. They are analogous to stromatolites on Earth. The "Bay Trees" are among the largest, some reaching 10 meters or more above sea level. To maintain this size the individual cells are connected in a very open, sponge-like manner. Most of a Bay Tree is empty...just air. They are very light, stronger than one might expect, but still subject to winds and waves that knock them down and force them to regroup and regrow again. ------------------------ You know how something seems so good when you do it, but years later, well, you realize it isn't. Back in the dark ages of 2004 I was putting together a series of renders of "pre-cambrian-esque" colony creatures for the mysterious planet of Ardelion because...well, I'm sure there was a reason at the time. The creatures, including this one, were modeled using Anim8tor, which accounts for the cylindrical symmetry. About the only thing I could get Anim8tor to do is create a figure of revolution with some random curve. Today, being far more sophisticated, my mediocre modeling is done with Wings 3D. (Meaning, of course, that my modeling is mediocre, not Wings 3D, which is very, very good.) I've been meaning to re-install Anim8tor and get back to using that too. It is a very useful program. But like so many things which are extremely trivial and not time consuming at all, I keep putting it off. I'm sure there is a lesson here, but I have no idea what it is.

I love the colors in this scene! I also like the reflections of the sky in the water. Very nicely done.
