Description

You can't tell 'where' Spontaneous Temporal Combustion may be occurring, and you certainly can't tell 'when.' You can't see it, you can't detect it, no one can. Timelines cross in the STC core, distortion clouds shift events, occasionally breaking and reforming the sequence of events in your part of the universe. You may be shifted from a timeline where you're President of the United States to one where you are Primary Autarch for the Southern Ocean District of the Third Theocratic Despotate, or, for that matter, to one where you are living on the street and in constant fear that yet another bucket of refuse will be dumped in your general direction. None of this is outside the grip of thermodynamics -- the process creates it's own 'waste.' This comes in the form of the Temporal Pocket Universes which swarm out of the STC. Inside a TPU everything is perfectly normal. But that's not quite true - time is looping. Events may 'reboot' after a century, or a millennia, or an hour. But in all cases the loop time is shrinking, the number of reboots increasing. Those inside will never notice that fewer and fewer events actually happen - they just live the ones that do. Eventually the loop is shorter than a quantum of time (a very small value) and the Temporal Pocket Universe evaporates into nothing. A special type of nothing to be sure, but for those inside, it is nothing enough. -------------------- This image was made with Bryce 6. There are some things which I modeled in Wings 3D, but they turned out to look like a bunch of spheres here, so it's hardly worth mentioning. I was attempting to make something far more mundane, a chamber for...well, perhaps I'll keep trying so you can find out when that is done. Anyway, I kept having trouble keeping the chamber weird but not too weird, and finally gave up, and just went totally weird. The best part of this image, for me at least, is the name. I was thinking of various possibilities until the notion of a time-based equivalent to Spontaneous Human Combustion popped into my head. Is any of this any good? As usual, it is hard for me to tell. I like the image, although I have certainly seen much better abstract digital images. I think the description way up at the top makes it neater, but then I have degrees in physics so I'm probably not the one to ask...
