Description

I spent some time in the subtropical part of South Africa (Tzaneen for those who Google) during the festive season. Where Ferns stand 7 to 15 feet tall and palm forests abound. Subtropical fruit and lazy afternoons mingle together...

This photo was taken of the cones of the Cycads, a South African species which is endangered. Cycads could easily be listed as one of the Big 5  in the "primitive" or fossil plant kingdom.
I found the converging straight lines and curving repetitive shapes quite fascinating - nature playing with art?

Thank you for visits and kind comments to a previous upload which did well in 2006:

I love this plant. It sort of looks like a cross between a pine apple and a pine cone or something. :-)

Nice one Busi. I believe this is a very spectacular capture as this species of Cycad only produces cones every 17 - 35 years. And the most interesting is Cycads are male or female and pollination is dependant on only one specific insect. This why reproduction take such a long time and also why they are so endangered. Great photo Oom Piet. In my book this compares to capturing a photo of the Bearded Vulture in its natural habitat, just to totally amazing.

Very interesting !! Thank you to make me know that fantastic plant allthow if to be protected !! Your previous in 2006, you add in thumb, is stunning, Piet You get a great artistic photo' talent and peek ! I am happy to see you sign Busi again, I like a lot that... And for the new year, a little funny joke (for my son not funny but bad...) : as said a french radio reporter yesterday : "the Bond's year" because, he said, in french it's "l'ann 2007 or l'ann de 007"(two is deux in french, "deux" gets the same phonetic than "de" which means of or to ) Hugs q:)Magali

This is beautiful Piet, I love the composition of these photos, particularly the way in which you've captured the depth, and the way that these lovely and detailed cones seem to fit so perfectly, almost cuddle into the arms of the ferns.... A Brilliant image my friend, Bravo!

More of Africa's exotic beauty. This plant looks like a tasty cousin of pineapple.

Aha! Sjoe! Twee brode nogal! Wowzers! ;0)
