Description
Sparked by vlatje's pictures, the flames were fanned by the birth of whisperssoft grandchild, and Andreas' announcement. They became reality when a friend told me he had just become a Daddy as well. Thanks to them all!
Daddy
You've never felt so giant, as when you hold that tiny hand.
You'll never feel as useless as when he says, " Dad, I can stand!".
He'll make you feel you're ten feet tall, that tiny trusting child,
but he'll only let you hold his hand, for such a little while!
As he grows he's going to need, a hundred thousand things!
Just be sure you give him good strong roots, and working wings.
Let him know where he comes from, that place that's always home.
Then teach him how to fly, to soar, teach him how to roam!
Treasure every cuddle, every kiss and hug and smile.
They'll bring him back from anywhere, to your heart from across the miles!
Wrap each moment of his childhood, place them just beneath your heart.
They'll help you keep your sanity, when the seperations start!
First it's off to school he goes, to test those wondrous wings!
Then he'll stretch them further, for camp and sports and things.
You can't do the falling for him, so teach him how to land!
Then you'll know he's safe to fly away, and be a man!
When it's been years since you could hold him, cuddled, sleeping on your chest.
There is just no way to pick one moment, as the best from all the rest.
But when he's grown and gone from home, he's made a brand new start.
You'l find comfort in that tiny hand wrapped firmly round your heart!

I thank you all! It felt rather like wearing a suit that had been tailored for someone else, writing from the other side of the bed. I'm working on another that feel the same way, I hope they work OK. Thanks again BJ

It's certainly a nice change to see fathers celebrated, although I never knew my real father and my stepfather was, well, hardly paternal. I do know the truth of your words, however, because I was fortunate enough to have a son for nearly thirty years. This carefully crafted piece is lovely. Mike

The first poem I ever wrote was for my Dad. One of those, where the first letter of each line spells a word. It was for Father's Day when I was seven. I couldn't afford a tie. He made me promise to keep writing poems. I wasn't sure I wanted to. It made him cry! I did keep writing, and he was my biggest fan. He had an enormous collection of ties and aftershave, but he kept my poem framed until the day he died. Thanks BJ

I couldn't agree with you more -- deep senses you portray. My two didn't wander far from home and I'm very thankful because I tried very hard to make their wings work according to their command. They are close but independent. Wonderful thoughts from you.
