I don't know if he was really embarrassed or not but he should have been. I watched this little guy try for ten minutes try to peck the hell out of this metal sign. He was determined I'll give him that much.

he might have been doing it because he thought it sounded good - some species drum to attract mates, or warn off rivals, so they want something to drum on rather the something which contains food. a tin roof will do. and as their brains are protected by a shock-absorbing structure they can do it without knocking themselves unconscious.
