Very nice, I really like the shape and the gradient texture. Try adding some ambient occlusion, it prevents your objects from seemingly floating above the surface. Excellent job for a first one, my compliments!

I think it's very well done! Reminds me of what a seashell would look like if it were robotic! But I agree with Sabra, try using Ambient Occlusion(if you have a later version, otherwise you will have to get a plugin). HDRI? GI? In any case....you're off to a great start! -chachi
