Description

This is just awesome! It is now visible in the southern hemisphere. We have had thunder and lightning storms the entire week and just my luck, during the best viewing time. Well tonight there were no clouds & storms and having only heard about it today, I didn't waste time. LOL If you set your exposure for 30 seconds you will get a strange effect. The comet will become a line almost perpendicular to the direction of the tail. My friend Charles was most fortunate to get this effect - hopefully he will post it on RR. I have no experience is astrophotography and snapped a whole memory stick full using different variations on speed, aperture and ISO. I hate high ISOs as the quality diminishes. Anyway - this is my measley attempt. Hope you like it and I hope you all have seen it reality. ;-)

Measly? Are you kidding? This is an outstanding shot. The best non-professional comet photo I have seen here or elsewhere for that matter.

Excellent shot. With your permission, I'd like to use it in my class. Also, the streak on your friends image is caused by the motion of the comet and the Earth. The effect would be an excellent example of how the tail is not caused by the movement of the comet, but by the solar winds pushing particles off the comet. The tail always points in the opposite direction of the sun. I hope he posts as well. It would be an excellent teaching opportunity.

Congratulations! Your's is beautifully captured against the city backdrop adding a lot of interest! Edit: I can not fail to see the apocalyptic nature of the comet heading almost straight for the city - well done!

A very good shot indeed considering the location. The only comparable images I've seen have been taken from remote/dark locations.

I'm so happy to see such a visible shot of McNaught. We had hectic cloud cover in Durban and I never got to view it with the naked eye. Thanks!
