Description
One of our first bunnies. Peter was a very large French lop who was surprisingly gentle and made a great pet for my then 5 year old daughter-- he'd let her carry around on his back all over the place. His only failing (if it is a failing for a male rabbit) was that he assumed anything that moved was a female rabbit and he acted accordingly. That led to some unfortunate consequences when he attempted to have his way with the family cat (a desexed male) and a balloon. The poor cat remained permanently traumatised, I think, and consciously avoided rabbits for the rest of his life-- his expression of horror and indignation was priceless. As for the baloon--well, it burst very loudly leaving a very startled rabbit hiding under a bed, but he was much more careful and discriminating after that. Peter died a few year ago-- a much loved pet, but he had a good long life and died peacefully of natural causes, unlike many others in my area that fall victim to dogs, foxes and feral cats.

I'm glad that this happy, friendly guy got to enjoy his life and bring joy to others. Losing a pet is so hard, although, as long as there is no obvious or chronic pain, I don't think they have ability to worry about the future. They live in the moment, and in the care of a loving family, which you clearly are, I've always felt pets like Peter the Giant Lop here, were just content to hop about from one place to another - with the ocassional scramble for fresh food I'm sure - and just be content being a bunny. A darn good bunny. There are lots of things we, the humans, get to do because we our aware of the future. On balance it's a good thing, I think, but there are certainly times (like now for me) when the future seems like a series of sheer walls that must be climbed before they fall back down and crush is. I've had plenty of opportunities in my life, I've been able to see things most people never do (astronomy stuff), I have a wonderful wife, a smart kid ready to take on Manhattan. But right now, just for a few weeks or months, I wish I could settle down like the great Bunny Peter was and just be content. It must be a very nice place to live. Ummm...sorry for the ramble. It's very late and I'm obviously off on some wistful blatherings. But the key: great shot of a wonderful pet.

LOL!!!! at your stories!! If only you could have gotten a close up shot of the look on your cat's face! Priceless stories, indeed. Lop eared bunnies seem very sweet, though I've never been around them.

Peter looks like he was a wonderful bunny. He has so much personality in your photo of him. I love lops - I think their ears are so cute and silly. I'm glad you were able to give him a long, happy life. The only thing that gets me through losing a beloved pet is knowing that they had the best life they could with the attention and love I gave them. You're obviously a good dad to all your pets.
