Description
This is a strip of five frames from a shot I've produced for a friend's sci-fi film "Impact Day".
The shuttle Foolhardy has been "borrowed" by our British heroes intent on saving the day from a meteor heading for the West Midlands. It's been battered about somewhat, graffitied, and yes, that window has been boarded up (did I mention it's a comedy?).
I modelled the shuttle from scratch in Maya, originally using NURBS patches, but converted to polys for texturing. There are some differences to the proper shuttle shape, in particular around the nose/windows area but I'm claiming artistic license :) The pods in the cargo bay were dictated by the script, as a lot of action takes place here (the live action elements taking place here and on the flight deck were shot in my friend's garage!), as was the rather unusual position of the shuttle rocketing away from Earth.
All the main textures were painted in Photoshop (there are some procedural textures for the metallic elements) and the 10 second shot was rendered in a number of passes using mental ray (beauty, shadow, engine glow and distortion).
The starfield and Earth shots were also rendered as separate passes, and the whole thing was composited in After Effects.
I'm very proud of the final shot - I hope you enjoy it.
