Description

I got the idea for this when I was counting some coins the other day. I painted the bump and colour maps in Photoshop from scratch using a two pence coin as a template. I'm not 100% happy with it because, dispite my best efforts (and massive render times) the shadowing effects caused by the final gather haven't worked properly in places. The image is lit only by a HDR sphere I made of my living room. It's slightly stylised since, as anyone from the UK will know, 2p pieces are never this shiny (and they're all from the same year, 1981!), but I figured they looked better like this than all grimy! The image was modelled in Maya, utilising rigid body dynamics to drop the coins onto the surface (tweaked by hand afterwards) and rendered in about three hours using mental ray. I touched up a couple of the shadows in Photoshop afterwards to make it look a bit better. I hope you like it. Comments as always are welcomed. Christian

Very cool image very realistic. The surface of the coins almost seem a little too soft. The lighting is totally awesome. And incredible texture work!

Very good realism, only thing would be the coins looking a bit to prefect, no scratches. Love the lighting!

Great image -- the judicious use of lighting and blur is quite good -- but the coin faces still seem too flat. The rim and characters on the coin faces especially need slightly more depth. I would not worry about adding scratches, et cetera; these look freshly minted. Amazing render!
