Description
Also called the Black-Shouldered Kite for obvious reasons, this guy is a native of the SF baylands. He must've been distracted by a big, juicy rat to have allowed me to get so close.

Awesome pictures. I know them as black shouldered kites. There use to be a breeding pair that worked the arroyo behind my house. I haven't seen them recently, but then I have been busy. I have some pictures of them but nothing like this. I love it when the hover for a bit while they scan the ground, one of the few birds who can do that.

a seriously maneuverable bird! It does look more like a chinook helicopter than a jet fighter- say, a cliff swallow.

Very good sequence.I think when they are focused on food they really don't care if you are near.
