Description

The Magus represents power and it's use or abuse. Traditionally it is one of the most significant cards in the deck. While not as easily recognized by the uninitiated as Death, The Lovers, The Fool or other such "famous" cards, it is the true introduction to the Major Arcana. The Fool starts us on our journey, diving headlong into the mysteries of the arcane, but the Magus lays the groundwork for understanding the use of these keys to unlock the mysteries of the Tarot. Traditionally all four magickal elemental weapons (or tools) are represented in the card art. These are the Pentacle (or disc), representing Earth, the Wand (or stave), representing Fire, the Cup (or chalice), for Water, and the Sword for Air. The fifth element; Spirit (or the AEther) isn't represented by a single icon, but lives through the entire deck. The position of the Magus' arms; one extending upward to the heavens and one downward; recall the Hermetic phrase "As Above, So Below" and are usually depicted as such mimicing the similar "Solve et Coagula" of Elephas Levi's infamous rendering of the hermaphroditic God/Goddess Baphomet. Finally the Magus is almost always depicted with the symbol for infinity above the head, indicating the infinite power of Mind, Spirit, and Magick. Rendered in D|S with postwork in Photoshop
