An interesting idea. I don't think i'd try to sell my poser stuff, at least not as "art" in the classical sense of the term. One thing you may not have considered though to make money is... selling out. For instance, i've seen the use of some poser models and outfits sold from renderosity used as visuals in small scale advertising (city-wide non national), and there's no reason why it can't work elsewhere as well. Personally, I wouldn't do that myself even though some of my posts are ad-like in character. But, it CAN make money. Speaking of branding, there's always tying in corporate logos into posts. I myself have used the Heineken logo on more than one occasion last year. I didn't get paid for it, did it because I thought it was funny, and was happy enough that I wasn't sued for trademark infringement. Some people may view selling art for ads as distasteful, but considering that the object of this endeavour is to make money off art, well that's one role you could take. In such a role, what you're selling is not art per-se, but the audience that can be attracted to a brand/message through your art. Again, this road is not for me, even though I find the concept of 'building audiences' appealing. In any case it's something to think about.

having the right knack for selling yourself and finding the right avenue is the secret but as to where it is I do not know. I think your idea is awesome and maybe some will benefit from it. I could sell a paint job for a house but selling art is a different ball game. I see I have many posts of yours to catchup on

Meredith; I've read through a large part of this but my eyes are tired so I've copied it to my notepad to save for later. Most of these ideas are worth examining more. I'm always trying to figure a way to turn my work into cash. So I'm going to follow this series closely. Thanks for starting this. :)

It sounds neat, but I do not think I am up to par yet. I was thinking of taking some classes to get up to speed. many times I know what I want to the picture to look like but do not have the computer skills yet

Marketing is the biggest step here. Having a real hungry crowd of people who want the art of photography. Being consistent in what is produced. Not to be too negative, but I found that coming up with ideas here was always left hanging. I was asking before about doing prints in the market place, but it went no where. So what has to happen is with all the people here,we need serious word of mouth. Perhaps getting businesses involved. Lease the art to a bank, hospital, real estate office etc. Anything to get a name. Having that is one of the first steps. Charging a lot of money for the art, so one does not come off as looking amateur. People who do have the money will spend it. Just think about a tomato soup can. I'm into this Meridith, so this should prove interesting.I have ideas, but need a kick to get started.

A really interesting idea, Meredith. I think links from Renderosity to one central site dealing with this might be an idea. The people that run RR are doing it as a money making venture so I am not sure how they would fit into the picture. Count me in!

Thanks for the previous pin-up site links. Yeah, I'm starting to see a bit of a certain style to my pictures. Last week, I bought "Practical Poser 7" so can really start learning the tool I'm using. As I got to the counter, the cashier said, "Oh Poser. Are you a graphic designer?" I thought for a bit. Hmmmmm..... Yeah, for awhile I had thought of doing something with my "art". I ended up just shrugging and replying I'm just a hobbyist. Just a hobbyist.

There are some good things here at Renderosity but most of it is remotely ever going to make it into a gallery. But if you can figure out an effective marketing strategy, you can sell at least some of it. Just look at Thomas Kincaid for how to market art pablum to the masses and make a fortune. I hope you keep this going. Maybe you can wake some of these people up!

I think this is going to be a real uphill battle, but if anyone can do it, you're the one Meredith. Best of luck on the whole project! You go, Girl!!!!
