Description
Strength is an interesting card for a number of reasons. The traditional image of a woman with a lion (in most decks she either rides atop the lion or is dangerously placing her hand or head in its jaws) is intended to represent spiritual strength, rather than physical as the title suggests. It is the controversy surrounding the card that makes it more interesting than anything else, however. Tarot scholars have disagreed over this card for almost a hundred years. Some insist that it belongs in position eight in the Major Arcana, while others say it should rightly be number twelve, switched with Justice. One deck, Aleister Crowley's Thoth tarot changes the name of the card to Lust and depicts a woman riding atop the Biblical seven-headed, ten horned Beast from the book of The Revelation of St. John. In Thelemic study this creature represents the woman Babylon.
