Description
This is 3rd in a series of my "inspired by the snow" visit to Victorian Village, here in Memphis Tennessee. Victorian Village is a small cluster of fully restored, French Victorian Mansions built in the 1800's.
I've visited there countless times, and shot almost everything from every conceivable angle. Even almost got arrested one time (got the shot though). But I'd never before been there after a snowfall, and going there last Friday morning after a fresh dusting was like going there for the first time.
Between the James Lee House, and the Woodruff-Fontaine House there is a lovely courtyard with a fountain. The brick pathways there go back to the original construction, and last Friday morning they were covered with snow.
But the warmth of these old bricks would have their way with the snow. It would take a few more inches before these worn but solid bricks would be denied.
Note the pattern the bricks were laid. It was such a beautiful design, and the combination of man's work from so long ago mixed with fresh input from Mother Nature was a delight to see. I hated to walk over it, but I had to so I could get over to the next house. But before I put my footprints there I preserved the moment that you see here.
Even in the snow, as you walk over these old bricks you can feel all the living that has taken place there over the centuries. The parties and receptions, the quiet Sunday afternoons as children played, the falling leaves of color in the autumn, and of course the many lover's secret midnight rendezvous, all mixed with untold drama and emotion.
But Friday morning it was as peaceful as I've ever seen it before.

What a wonderful eye you have for the less than obvious...and for preserving it in this photo before walking on it. I, too, have felt the past seep through beneath my feet on old brick...in Boston...words cannot describe the sensation felt in one's soul.

An amazing black and white! Looks like you all got just the perfect amount of snow that day. Not too much to do any harm and just enough to allow for beautiful photos like this one to be taken. Really love the patterns left by the melting snow!
