Description
Thanks to everyone for the wonderful advice. In this image I've incorporated some of the things you mentioned. The lighting is a bit darker, hopefully setting a more mysterious mood. I added some ripples to the water and I very much want some opinions on how well they are working. Instead of adding a third figure or some rocks in the background (I thought those would detract from the figures in the foreground, although I do agree that the blankness was a distraction in itself) I added a shadowy wet spot along part of that back wall.
Please, let me know what you think.

archetype
Nice render. One small suggestion would be to change the girls pose a bit. She looks like she's modeling rather than feeling the tension of hearing an ominous (and potentially deadly) sound. A tense look of fear and trepidation would heighten the fear effect. Compositionally, the water and object placement is excellent. I wouldn't add anything else to it. Good job!

I agree with archetype. Overall the image is very strong (and beautifully colored) but the girl looks like she's posing for a pin-up. Which is a problem with a lot of the fantasy artwork on this site...myself included.

I like the overall look to this, composition is good. No need to add anything. One thing you might want to try just to see how it looks to you is use just one light source, kinda high and 45 degrees to the scene. If you give it a bluish tint, it will more resemble night time lighting.
