Life is full of choices and temptations. As evolved as humans are, we are all still easily enchanted by small, shiny objects and green pieces of paper. The Seven of Cups illustrates the myriad of choices and temptations that we may meet in the course of our lives and how it can be just as easy to be duped into making a bad choice as it is to make a good one. Seven cups float before our subjects, and each is essentially identical. Some contain the promise of riches (the crown and jewelery), some promise life (the tree, in bloom), some promise power (the sword), but others contain the threats of peril and death (the skull, serpent, and spider). Our subjects see only the shiny golden cups, however, and are unaware just what they contain. The lesson that this card offers is that when one must make a choice (and what is life but a long series of choices and outcomes), one must choose as wisely as possible and not be lured by false promises of wealth and power. This is a fundamental lesson and goes back to the foundations of many religions. It is especially well illustrated in the Judeo-Christian story of Adam and Eve.
