Description

This is the second post regarding Copyright Infringement. The first part is located a: Meredith_0268 - Copyright Infringement Again - here is a BIG DISCLAIMER!!! I AM NOT OFFERING LEGAL ADVICE!!!!!!! Intellectual Property Law, of which Copyright Law is a part, is a very complex subject that is the realm of experts in the field, that is, competent legal counsel that specializes in intellectual property law. I am NOT an attorney - and I am NOT QUALIFIED TO OFFER LEGAL ADVICE. I can not and will not and am not offering legal advice - all I'm doing is offering a few common sense suggestions!!! ******************** IDENTIFY YOUR WORK AND SOURCE!!!! ******************** Take a look at the bottom of the picture above! It is my standard copyright and trademark info that appears on all my pictures, but something NEW has been added. "meredithwilson as seen on Renderosity" Think about how POWERFUL that statement is!! If you see this picture on Renderosity in my gallery then you can be pretty darn sure that I was the one that posted it and it is being used with my knowledge and permission! If you see it ANYWHERE ELSE you instantly know it was RIPPED OFF! No questions needed - the picture is NOT being displayed with my knowledge and permission and the site operator is VIOLATING MY COPYRIGHT!!! And even better, even if you don't have a clue who Meredith Wilson is, you know exactly how to blow the whistle on the creeps because my user name is right there so you can IM me!!! My web site is also listed and it's got a zillion e-mail addresses you can use to contact me and let me know what the crooks are doing!!! ******************** BECOME A COP!!!! ******************** If you go to the "About Us" page here at Renderosity, you will find that they say they have 200,000 active members in 186 countries! Those numbers have always seemed a little suspect to me, but after a little research, I am firmly convinced that they are not blowing smoke and that in fact, that is just the tip of the iceberg!! I have not gotten any privileged information from Renderosity - all I did was use the resources publicly available to all of us - the "What's New" listings and the "Who's On-line" listings. I have been doing some statistical analysis and I truly believe that Renderosity's number are if anything, an understatement!!!! OK - so what????? All of us not only visit Renderosity, we visit other places. The reason we know that the Russian site is ripping off images is that someone saw them there!! If we can mobilize these 200,000+ members to alert us when they see one of our images in the wrong place, we have created a "copyright infringement police force" of 200,000+ people that stretches to every corner of the Earth!!!! There are two things needed for that to happen: First, me MUST label our art so it is apparent that it is stolen and so that our "police force" knows who to contact! And second, we have to get the word around to those 200,000+ people to be on watch for stolen art!!! I'm gonna run out of room - continued in the first comment block below!! The image of the money used in the thumbnails was downloaded from the Bureau of Engraving, U.S. Treasury Department and used in full accordance with their rules of use.

My head hurts just thinking about all the things we should do to protect our work. I have all my images from day one on my gallery pages. People told me I should take them all down just in case. It really sickens me that their are people out there doing this. Do you know if if you put all the copyright stuff on there they can just crop it out or worse just use a clone tool over it to erase it. I am not sure there is anything we can do accept for alert people when you see there images. Okay now I have a headache why cant people just be honest for crying out loud. I do this art for fun and shouldn't have to worry about any of this......Shannon ;{

Hi Meredith, another sound bit of info, im faving this one too As i said to you in IM just now I'm going to set up a forum (eventually) and put the link on all my images from now on in the text, once i have done this I urge all to do the same and post this link, it will result in a network of folk who have access to this and it will be a platform for those who see anyones work to use that link, This way all can see the offending sites and act on it accordingly, we need to cover each others backs in this and stand firmly together. One thing last week when all this was happening with photobucket and the russian site is that if enough people complain they remove the lot, the first few they asked questions but i think after the 6th or 7th complaint they pulled the whole site. This person and all her clone names need to be added to the forum im due to set up so that people are aware of her by her other names and not just the one from photobucket. The info on the bottom of your image is a great idea, if you have posted it here only and someone sees it elsewhere then it is a trigger to say this is not right, yes they can remove it by cropping but from what happened last week, the theives were blatently leaving stuff on and actually putting the name of the artist in the title!!!! If you put a coypright watermark across the whole image then its possible but less likely someone will remove it, they will just huff and puff and go onto the next image as its not worth their while, if they do remove it then it will probably show up in print so i doubt they will sell it. Another thing is to keep the image small and at 72 dpi, this again will stop anyone from doing a decent print from it, i looked into digimarc but its expensive and what ive heard it also degrades the image to some extent, again this apparently can be removed by the theives :o( Whats that saying by Winston Churchil.... "we must fight them on the beaches..." AND ON THE INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More excellent advice and the step by step procedure for stopping the abuses. You again have done an excellent job of researching and this should be a huge help to everyone having problems!

More sound advice and thank you for the tip!!! I have to agree with Ilona, I get alot of people that add me to their favorite artist, just so that can get my artwork on their desktop. Anyway, your advice sounds very helpful and thank you for the wonderful tip!!! Excellent idea Meredith!!! Hugsss Frankie ^_^
