Description
One of the main problems with modelling a well known thing, be it a car, a phone, a energizer bunny, is that there will people who nit-pick. When you chose to render something as iconic as the USS Enterprise it opens up a whole new level of nit-pickers... Trekkies. "The nacelles are too long, the saucer section didn't have ridges until the third movie" crap like that. So I should say that this isn't supposed to be accurate, it's more a representation of the Enterprise.
I am a Trekker (not a trekkie) and I do love the "idea" of Star Trek. It's just most of the actual episodes I don't like. One thing, that bugged me was lighting. It's space, there ain't a lot of light out there. Occasionally they do a nice job , but mostly it's like it's dragging flood lights along with it.
So really I set out to make a Star Trek picture with no lights other than what the ship has with it.
This was modelled in Wings. Rendered in Carrara with ambience taken down to zero and just the 20 or so running and navigation lights for illumination.
Classed as a WIP since it's one of those models that I'll never finish.
Thanks for looking and thanks for not nit-picking. ;-)

Very Nice I like it. I like Star Trek as well...but I dont go over board. :)

Looks great. Well what I can see of it anyways. Oh incidentally, the way they always explained the light was the ships structural integrity field puts off visible light which is why the enterprise almost always looks lit up. And that was direct from the horses mouth. Someone asked James Doohan that question at a convention I was helping to put on and that was his response. I suppose you have to listen when Scotty says it. lol

Looks good (I think), I like all the colored lights. But it's really too dark to show off the modelling, at least on my monitor... :)

dude, the engines are too far apart :D

I could barely see it....But what i could see was cool..

Nice work. I always wondered how they would explain the light too. What, floodlight droids? Anyway, all the angles are a nice touch.

But... But... But... LOL Nice job!

looks great...I had the worst time trying to get the saucer section right; smoothing it is one of those things that had to be done just so..;) lot of time and care went into this...keep it up.

Maybe I'm blind but i can't really see the ship itself. I'm sure though that with the work you do it is impressive.

I guess I didn't explain myself very well. The idea isn't to show the ship, in fact the idea is to not show the ship. This is an experiment in just showing the running lights and what light comes from them illuminates the ship.

I LIKE IT! It is a cool concept and you're right. Once you get a certain distance from a star, you don't have much ambient light to work with. Anyway, it's a great pic and I love the concept. Give me more. Z.B.

One of the best renders of the old girl i have ever seen. between the stars there is only the light you take with you. 5+ rating. long shall STAR TREK TOS BE THE BEST.

Obviously I'm not too sure, but I would think this is what they would look like in deep space, awesome idea and excellent setup.
