Description
I know a few people enjoy this type of post, so here's another. Please view full-size!
Saturday was a dreadful day for photography, but I set myself the goal of taking a shot I could 'get my teeth into' in postwork.
Houseboats on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Trent Lock, Sawley, Nottingham UK. Right next to my golf club (well I was teeing-off in 30 minutes!!)
Postwork: Fill-light, colour saturation/ luminosity/ vibrance and contrast (levels, brightness, blacks) in Adobe Raw 4. ND gradient (top & bottom) in PS. Sorry but I had to take the EXIF out to get under 500Kb.
Comments good & bad always appreciated. Thanks for looking!!

Canon 5D, 17-40L @33mm, f11, 1/100s, -3 exposure compensation (to keep the sky fom burning), ISO 500.

Interesting result. It shows just how much information can be pulled out of an image that is not seen on first glance. imo it looks rather unrealistic for a photograph taken at these lattitudes because the light is too much in the red spectrum, much like it would be for more southern places nearer the equator. Nice work though Steve it's good to experiment and see just what is attainable.

Ya know, I think I find the structures and boats not as "warm" in the postworked photo but the plant life is and water and sky is much better postworked. Sort of a "mixed bag" for me. Both are great a bit of each put together sits in my mind's eye the best.

Love the colors, looks very circa 1960.

Not all HDS images work, especially with only three exposures, but due to the overcast you experienced it helped, otherwise I feel that you would have needed a larger number of exposures to achieve a greater exposure range. The key issue I find with most HDR images is that they appear more as illustrations or photographs that have been airbrushed. With this image we still have the illustrative feeling, though it is pleasing to the eye. Anyhting more dramatic would spoil it. Thank you for sharing. egmont

Very interesting indeed - and a mixed bag, too. It's a little bigger than life feel. But then again - it probably would not be noticed if the comparison wasn't there...

I think the postwork is great and big example how you work. Thank you so much to show to us.. And congratulations on the LWITG too my friend. Hugs. Luis

My preference is for the first image in this case. While the post-worked image seems to help the grass and trees, the colors and tones look unatural for the manmade structures. Interesting comparison.

I love posts like these. I was thinking of doing one myself...I think you did a wonderful job and I love the result...even if it is a bit 'illustrated' looking. I think that's because we're accostumed to seeing things in real life, that look more like the original photograph. All the color in the reworked version seems almost surreal. But that doesn't mean it's not good, Steve. I like the second image a lot...and I think it's a lovely and artistic improvement on an otherwise dreary shot. Okay. I'm done...lol. Hope you'll do more like this. I sooooooooo love knowing what people do with PS and stuff...-M :^ )

Nice example what can postwork do. The first one expresses the mood of moment more realisticaly, the second one is perfect poscard.
