Description
I was nervous about uploading my first render since joining the Critics Group.
This scene came from an idea I had when I first saw Stonemasons excellent (as always) Backstreets prop and a little inspiration from Primeval (TV series).
Posed it in P7, but then couldn't render it in anything except POV-Ray (Shade 7LE, Vue 5 Esprit, Carrara 5 - all died during import). I used (Flyerx's excellent) PoseRay to re-texture and re-light the scene.

I think you've done a really good job with this one. The whole scene is very nicely done. The reflections in the water are excellent.

CG. Looks like a ton of work getting it all in place .. Ik like the reflection in the water.. Its a strange light color .. not bright and not dark .. The POV is not like i whould have done it ..but its your image.. But why dont you Try tilting the camera to te left so the road goes from left to right across the screen. And a little bit more focus on the dragon and the front of the cars and people... I hope you get my idea .. ;} Chris

Great POV..the red car material looks a little out of place..(too clean) which doesnt go with the rest of the image. when I first saw the image I thought there was a giant bug in it...lol..but I looked at the Full size and realized it was a dragon...very cool concept.

i really like this! its very well done. a couple of things though... i find the blue sky of the forest a bit distracting- maybe stick another tree in there :D and also i'm not keen on the lighting, but i'm not sure what to suggest to improve it :)

I really like the concept of this image and the detail is amazing. There's a whole lot going on her. When I read Zollster's comment about the forest I had to do a double take. Which brings me to my issue, I can see a focus in this image. There are so many things going on, but everyone seems to be a second part, who's the lead? I would guess you want it to be the dragon and the lines of the image deliver him, but there's no bang when you get there.

That's pretty cool! I'm not completely sure of the reason, but the dragon looks a litte bit like a scale model - I think it's because his shadow seems subtly sharper than the other shadows in the scene. Interior of the trick cab is a little too brightly lit for me. You may want to put a little more action into the unicorn pose, give him some power. I really like the reflection in the water, contrary to some other comments. Overall it's a really interesting scene, great use of Stonemason's excellent set.

Don't have any crits that haven't already been mentioned, so I'll simply say 'nice job'! I have several of Stonemason's sets, and they are ALL great for some spectacular scenes. Excellent use of it. It's a pity that the camera has to be pulled so far back to see everything. The farther back it goes, the more detail you lose.

The scene is creative. To put a dragon with a forest behind in a city with cars and a naked lady in a unicorn... Who would think of putting all these things together, and still "work" as a scene?! So, excellent on the creativity and imagination side. Personally, I dont like the lighting very much. It seems as if this is being lit by a big spot light and not by the sun. Maybe it's the too dark and too defined shadows, or maybe it's the color, I'm not sure. I also think a bit more of ambient light would be better, but that's just my humble opinion. In fact, at first sight, the dragon does seem a giant bug, that was my 1st impression too. So, if two people felt the same, maybe you could try to open the wings or put another pose that would more easily show this as a dragon. I also don't like the bit of sky seen on the top. It has a very different color and "mood" from everything else. Also the red car is too red and bright, very distracting from the main "actor". In general, I like this picture a lot.

Very creative, a lot to look at. great concept. I actually thought the dragon was a giant cockroach LOL (just re. watched MIB) had to re look when I read peoples comments. The only negative thing that struck me was that the unicorn is a little stiff & shiny, looks to me a bit like a placed toy.

I will echo the comments about the lighting, it just looks too "flat". You might consider having the sun come from behind the viewer, to bring out the action down below.

I really like the POV and the scene set up. The reflection is great, but doesn't seem to match the lighting on the rest of the scene - the vehicles and buildings look as if it's an overcast day, or late evening, whereas the reflection and the sky behind the jungle look much brighter. I'm not familiar with Poseray so I don't know if that's a factor. I really love the concept and I hope you keep working on it!

your composition is simply remarkable. i can't believe you tried so many different applications and solutions. this image proves the value of perseverance and vision. the concept is great, and the combination of a stonemason set and rdna plants is just stellar. just a question: why is the truck there? since the image seems to tell a specific story, i would guess that the old truck was abandoned with its door open for a reason. i don't know poseray, so i don't have any lighting suggestions there, but photoshope or some other image editor can help you improve lighting a great deal. i think that you could add a bit more contrast to the scene and make a more obvious focal point. my immediate reaction is that the dragon would have been great about twice as big, but that's just one of myriad possibilities. wonderful image. all that hard work paid off.

I really like how it looks as if the dragon is pulling the forest/jungle with him into the city. Maybe if you had the woman on the unicorn in a running pose coming from the forest area it would seem more like she's from the same world as the dragon and running away from him to the city for safety. I do like the layout and the viewpoint but I do agree that the lighting seems a bit flat, maybe darken it some and add spotlights from the streetlights to illuminate the ground to give it some depth. Very original concept and great composition :D cheers!

First of all, great work! I love the composition and camera angle. I also like the red car - it helps to focus the viewer on the "action" part of the scene. I agree with the others about the lighting being a bit flat though - more dramatic lighting would really help. Please forgive me if I'm offering advice you already know or are using, but you might try bumping up the intensity of the light and zeroing out the ambient for everything in the scene (you can add an ambient_light 0 tag in the global settings block to avoid having to edit all those mat files, though you might have to tweak the background). I usually use something like rgb <1, 0.98, 0.9>*4 for sunlight depending on the radisoity settings. You might also try using a regular point light or area light instead of parallel (if you are using a parallel light, that is). If the shadows come out too dark, you might try adding a fairly dim shadowless point light at same location as the camera or perhaps adding a very faint fog to the scene (not enough to appear foggy, but just enough to add a little haziness). One trick I use when importing an entire Poser scene is to create a cube in Poser where I want the light to be, use Poseray or Wings3D to find the center of the cube and place my own light source there instead of using the imported lights. On the reflection of the water, you might try using a variable reflection if you're not already (something like reflection {0, 1} conserve_energy) or even adding a scaled down bozo pattern normal to the water. Again, I apologize if I'm being too technical with the pov-ray settings or coming across as being overly critical, because this really is a great image and it's always good to see works from other Pov'ers here.
