Description

It's been 100 years of the triode, better known as the vacuum tube. Used in early electronics, these things, along with relays, were at the core of our early computers, made wireless communication possible, and put sound into film. They consisted of a lot of glass, an anode, cathode, and control grid in a vacuum. They were fragile things. I remember the vacuum tubes in the back of TV's, and at night they used to glow with this semi-orange color. They were always a source of mystery to me. Here in this render three tubes glow in that color I remember from my childhood. The rest have burned out, one is discarded. This is the state of the triode industry today, they are almost all gone except for places like Russia (the Russian military likes them for their resiliance against EMP weapons) and with serious music enthusiasts (they handle certain frequences much better than digital systems). Bryce 6.1, SolidWorks models, was a candidate to the Bryce glass challenge.

Ah, the warmth and mystery of the vacuum tube! Lovely render of an interesting subject matter. Being a (very 3rd rate!) guitarist, I understand the special quality a tube amplifier can bring to a guitar sound. Well done!

not only used in the first computers, but those first computers took up whole rooms on various floors just for simple calculations. Great modeling and hope it wins :P

Very realistic modelling and render, very crisp!! Just a thought, but maybe you could emphasis the glow a litle more (artistic liscence over realism)

Simply outstanding...again! I have yet to play with the HDRI as I'm just too busy at the moment but you make me want to play. I wish it were a tiny bit lighter or like Lown says, a bit of glow to highlight the subject. I remember going to the store to pick up a new tube. So glad those days are gone, lol.

the only downside to tube amps is the @#$% heavy transformer they need. I'm sure my arms are longer than they would be otherwise..;) great modeling.

You mean they used these in the previous century? They look like something from the 23rd century. :)

Very cool and very nicely done! My favorite tube, to look at has always been the "magic eye", an early alternative to the VU meter. Very cool to watch. I repaired vacuum tube sets back in my junior high days for extra money and refurbished discarded ones to resell. See what you've gone and done, brought back memories. ;)
