My name? Eric den Biesen, a Canadian of Dutch ancestry. I'm 46 years young, though I sometimes feel MUCH older. I generally like to model in trueSpace, though I'm learning Carrara and Hexagon as well. Not much free time for it, so anything I'm building progresses REAL slowly. :( I like to illustrate my tales of the Imperium with Poser and/or Bryce, or that story's prequel, Siren's Song, the story of the Human/Mer first Contact. Neither story is more than outline, and bits are told through the pics I do. And because it's fun, of course. :)

Sorry Greywolf... No ego puncturing here, this is fantastic. In my opinion you did a phenomenal job with the lighting. (But then my ego takes quite a few bruises in that area too). Great expression, great pose - figure and hair. Nothing but kudos from me!

You did a good job of lighting a difficult subject--super pale skin with dark clothes and hair. Easy to blow out the skin or lose all the shadow details. Nice pose and composition. I like your choice of background -- it's appropriate to the subject without a lot of distracting detail.

I like the character a lot!!!!! She's almost too sweet to weld that big gun!!!!!

well the second i looked at the pic i thought vamp..so that comes across well :D. theres a light coloured rectangle on the right hand side of the pic that i dont think belongs there. i dont like the texture of the front of the gun. to me it looks like foam - like a kids toy gun

Well done!

This is really well done :)

SSS and pale skin doesn't work very well. You got a pretty good balance, I suppose. I agree about the gun muzzles. To matte looking and I think paer of the problem MIGHT be the posing of it conveys no weight. The hand should grip it stronger, the shoulder should sag a little under the burden. Even if she's super-strong, the human brain shouts the gun's made from plastic and weightless because of her handling of it. Overall--It's a wonderful start off into unfamiliar territory for you and a top-drawer render! I REALLY like it a lot!

i think she came out beautifully. i was going to post to the thread you had asking for advice, but you've achieved a softer paleness than i ever have in poser, and i think it's just about perfect. you might tone down the redness a bit, and go a bit more towards a green, yellow or blue in that sss since she's an ex-vampire (how in the world does that happen?). you might also use that texture on her shirt as a displacement and bump map at light strength, with maybe a touch of noise added. not knowing weapons, i can't say much about the muzzle, but it does look "off." i can say you should probably try some ambient occlusion on those barrels, zoom in your shadow cam, or raise your shadow resolution. you know something funny? with that texture, sapphire fox hair does looks kind of like paradise hair unbound. and her skin is amazing. i think you did a marvelous job of depicting your character, and absolutely mastered a new format.

The only thing that I don't like about this excellent picture is the teeth :( I don't use poser so I can't really suggest what to do. I do know that in DAZ Studio there are a couple of shaders that would just make them look more realistic :)

wonderful work!!!!!!!!

I agree with everyone about the job you've done with the lighting, it looks great over the whole image. Even the weapon barrels (i've seen non-reflective metaling that looks very similar IRL) But now i'm going to go against the flow a bit and suggest the face looks painted. Which is fine if that is what you are going for. Cobaltdream hit it right by saying it was too red but i'm at a loss as to how to help you light it to get a more realistic skin tone because i'm still on P4 with non of the fancy do-dads. Personally, i think it looks great as is, but if you are going for more realistic skin then i don't think you've hit it yet.

I think the lighting is fantastic and Cam with it!! Terrific work!!

Excellente image!!!!! BRAVO

This looks good, specially for a 1st try. My main crit goes to the mouth area. This is what immediately grabbed my attention. The teeth in the inside, molars, etc, have too much light. The teeth texture seems a bit plastic. Also the lipstick doesnt seem to fit well the lower lip geometry, specially visible in her left side. There seem's to be light coming out of her nose. The 2nd thing that grabbed my attention was the outfit texture, it seems to lack some bumpiness. Looking forward to see the 2nd try! :-)

SHE'S VERY BEAUTIFUL,READY FOR THE FIGHT, GREAT WORK. BRAVO

Nice closeup render, she's a little on the Vampy side ain't she?
Greywolf Starkiller
Yup. In the story of the Hounds, vampirism was found to be caused by an alien virus. In the 27th century, it can be cured, though the cure is a painful one! I'm going for realism here. Anything I learn in the portrait attempts, can be used to make the characters look better in action as well. Will post a second try after I get some time to follow all the suggestions. Thanks for the crits!

Cool image. Your lights are nearly spot on, agree about the gun, looks a bit plasticy

Superb work with subject & lighting! Bravo!

I'm finding a lot of your artwork (which I'd not really seen before the crit group) really groovy. Its very stylized, and this is no exception. The only thing that could add to it (and i do mean IMO the ONLY thing), is a little shadow to the teeth (where the lip meets teeth in view) to give the mouth more depth. But thats about it.

Great expression and light!!! Beautiful setting

The funny part? I had Ambient Occlusion turned on, but raytracing turned OFF! Without raytracing, I read that Ambient Occlusion won't work. :) What a dummy I be!
pjz99
Hey, how do you know until you try it yourself! :) My only real concern is that side of her neck towards the gun - there seems to be quite a bit of light coming at it, but I can't imagine from where, because there's a big honkin gun where the light would be coming from. I expect that's because the hair is set to not cast shadows. If you're concerned about render time due to raytraced shadows (and they can add a lot of render time) Ambient Occlusion doesn't need raytraced shadows to work, just in the render settings; so depthmapped shadows should be OK. Aforementioned big honkin gun looks very cool and I like the way she's interacting with it - god, that sounds awkward.
giorgio_2004
It's a very nice portrait! The contrast between her "innocent" looks and the BIG GUN is the first thing that strikes me. Great texture on the suit!
CrimsonDesire
Wow she looks tough an' kools an' she's luggin' around some serious hardware as well, awesome ^^

I've commented on this image before, and I stand by what I said on those previous versions. DO keep up the good work. DPH
