Description

Alright, so this is the photo I wasn't so sure about uploading yesterday. Had a heck of a time coming up with a title that I liked, but this seemed fitting. We went to the USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor while we were in Hawai'i. I'm sure many of you have seen photos of the memorial out in the water. I was surprised to learn that there's parts of it that still stick out from the water and that they'd actually had to cut off part of the ship. But that's not the point of this. At the one end of the memorial, they've got a listing of all the crew that went down with the ship, and then I noticed this other listing off to the side that just made me stop short for an instant when I read it. In case the angle of the lettering is too odd for you to read, here's how the top reads. "USS Arizona Survivors Interred With Their Shipmates" John (Click to enlarge as needed)

That means, that almost 30 (I counted 23, I might be wrong) of those survivors, chose to be buried with their war time colleagues. That just goes to show the comradeship between Soldiers and Sailors...not forgetting Airmen! This is a phenomenal picture John. Well spotted! Steve :o)

A wonderful reminder at all this young sailors who drowned!!!! In the village I come from in Germany we had a young guy, he was the only surviver from the German U-Boot U-Hai(U-2365)which sunk at Sep. 14th 1966 with 20 men on board!! He was never again what he was before and he never ever talked about what was happen!!! Thanks for sharing!! Hugs Ute

My friend John!!! Thank you for sharing with us this picture. This is a more important picture than it can seem in a first moment because it reminds us as the horrors of the war can affect the people and it reminds us also that after all, we have a human side also and that we needed to rescue that side to avoid other wars. Very well done my friend.

Not only educational, but as others have stated... a sharp reminder of what war is really about.

Good men, and I can certainly understand their desire to be buried there. Heck, I lost my brother 11 or so years ago, not to military, but I'd be honored to be buried beside him. I agree w/ helderres. I just wish more of the humane side would be embraced sometimes.
