Description

I've wanted to post this picture for a while now, so I finally got around to it. It was taken last summer right at the edge of the Grand Canyon, just a few yards away. Not your typical Grand Canyon shot, eh? Very windy conditions that day. The bright light levels allowed me to shoot at a high enough shutter speed to freeze the blowing flowers. But the backlit sun on whatever these strange (flowers?) were was eye-catching indeed. As bright as the late afternoon was, these just seemed to glow all on their own. Anybody know what these are? Thanks for viewing!

This plant is commonly known as Apache Plume - derived from the fact that it resembles Apache war bonnets. It's an evergreen shrub, a member of the Rose Family. The plant blooms from April through June. The blooms are white flowers, with yellow centers. :) Such a beautiful photo! Love the backlit feathery plumes - looks very whimsical to me as if they could easily become detach and float away on the desert breeze.
