Description

The Cape Parrot is named so because it lives on the "Cape Horn" of South Africa. It is endangered due to loss of habitat, mostly due to logging of African Yellowwood trees, and the fatal outbreaks of Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD). Yellowwood trees provide the parrot's main food source and nesting sites. Conservation efforts by South Africa have brought the population, estimated at 500 in 2000, to over 1000 in 2006. The key to the survival of this species is in captive breeding programs. Cape Parrots are rare as pet birds. Rendered in Poser 7 with no postwork. Credits: Photo background (me), Tree branch from "Perching Places" (me) and the Cape Parrot from the upcoming "Songbird ReMix Parrots of the World" (me, again).
