Chief Inspectrix Sata'agi Na'El, unofficially known as "The Rabbit" (and never to her face), is half-human, half-Neramec. Thanks to her Neramec side, she is unbelievably clever, can expect to live to be 400 SGYs old, has absolutely no sense of humour whatever and has comically long ears. Funnily enough, the fluorescent hair is from a human ancestor (from New Watership Down). Her subordinate is checking the prisoner's identity via the holo-projector in her skinsuit, but Sata'agi has already done that, with her eidetic memory. They've got their man, all right. She's threatening him with her gun, but she won't need to use it. A full Neramec is about ten times, on average, as strong as a human. Part-human, Sata'agi would be about six times as strong as an average human male. If he runs, she has already calculated, to thirteen decimal places, how far he will get, in both metric and imperial measurements, and it's not far. Since the Neramec are stronger, cleverer and longer-lived than humans, why do they cross-breed with them? Well, there are an awful lot more humans, for one thing, but there also seems no doubt that the Neramec are absolutely fascinated by this humour-thing, precisely because they simply don't get it.
