Description

Okay, time to get serious about this stuff. Ever since I joined the Photography membership last May, I've marveled at the fantastic macros of the insects and spiders the others have come up with in their postings. In their case, all they had to do was step out into their backyards or immediate areas and voila!, there were butterflies, squirrels, birds, insects, spiders, etc., galore, at their beck and call. But with me, the only insects I encountered were the pesky little ants rummaging through my kitchen, along with some spindley daddy-long-legs setting up shop in some corner. In my general area, butterflies are merely a myth and never to be seen. So, when I found that the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was putting on a display of live butterflies, guess who got all excited and grabbed his camera(s). The display is only temporary, running from 4/15 to 9/3/07, another reason to strike while the iron is hot. Because of limited space within the compound, and the volume of visitors, we were limited to a mere half hour of strolling about and taking pictures, with no tripods allowed. But, fortunately, in my case, when I explained to the admission person that I was a cub photographer for Renderosity, I was allowed a full hour of roaming about to do my thing. They are really a nice and accommodating people up there in NHM. Since I'm still adapting to the various caprices of my new Pentax SLR, with its new Sigma 28-200mm F3.5-5.6 DG Macro lens, I figured the casualty rate would be high and took about a hundred and fifty photos, expecting at least to salvage perhaps ten good shots out of those. But, in post examination, I was amazed to discover many more decent captures than ten. Incidentally, the photos were taken in manual focus, and none in auto focus. So, here goes, my contribution to the world of insect photos. Oh yes, the butterfly depicted above is of the monarch species, thanks tons for stopping by, and for reading the text.
