Description

This is a male Redwinged Blackbird. I found these beautiful living parts of nature when at a service station, fueling up my truck. There is a tiny bit of wetland behind the station and beyond that is manicured grass of a retirement center. Someone had the foresight, I hope, to leave this tiny wetland alone. This is the stuff of redwinged blackbirds..cattail reeds on the edges and thick enough to provide a safe nesting haven. This tiny wetland looked empty but for the reeds, then I approached and several male birds took to the air, away from me but singing loudly and staying in obvious view. I believe I was to be distracted by them..you see, in the reeds were the females, subdued colors, nesting and building nests. These birds are not easily approached.. The red is followed with a yellow patch on the wing. When flying, the red is astounding, covering perhaps a third of the wing in bright scarlet. They were too flitty and quick to get a flight shot. I will keep trying.

These red winged blackbirds just love those catails, you can always find them hanging out wherever they are!!! They're not easy to catch either!!! Excellent catch!!!!!
