Description

Watercolor and pen&ink on paper. Size - 19"x19" Bottom left - village in the UK Top left - US city skyline Right - in front of our house. Critique group - Pre-Poser days, no CG involved in this at all. Comments still very welcome. You can comment on colors, composition and any other art issues or comment about what you like/dislike, what it makes feel or think etc. Or not at all if you really dont want to. EDIT: For those who are interested, some of the watercolor techniques I used: - Wet-into wet: Mixing colors on the paper, while the paper is wet(eg in the sky) - Dry brush washes: adding layers of new colors, after prev. layers dried. (Skin, cloths) - Salt: sprinkling salt on freshly painted areas, the salt absorbs some of the paint to craete a mottled effect (leaves on bottom bushes) - Lifting paint with brush: 'painting' with clear water over prev. painted area and blotting the paint(tree trunks in background) Pen & ink: for adding thin crisp lines, for better definition of shapes and added texture. (On the buildings and vegetation). I probably forgot some, but just an indication of what's involved.

This is a fantastic image! Really thought-provoking. It makes me think about how you can imagine yourself into any place and/or time but really the fabric of that fantasy is quite a thin "sheen" and that the individual is always drawn to (or held back by) their roots. In a slightly different way, it also makes me think about dreams and desires but not being able to achieve them because you're held back by something. Anyway, that's what I get from it. It's nothing like the title might suggest and it might not be what you intended but there we go...! ;) It's great work nonetheless!

Yes, I agree with the previous comment; its something like those things we want to achieve and not be able to. Im not a watercolor artist but I found it superb in every way; good composition, nice color and lights distribution. And most of all, you can feel the vibrations that come from it. Thanks for sharing this again!!!

Very creative & beautifully composed & colored. I especially like the torn, curling & sewn page effects that both separate & tie together the different parts of this image...

Wonderful! You seem to have a real knack for painting buildings .. or maybe it's me having a knack for noticing them :)

You do some really cool tricks with watercolor - I don't know that much about watercolor painting but I do understand some of the things you're doing that take a lot of skill. Particularly the fine leaves at the bottom and the trunks of the trees at the background of the England portion. Beautiful color on the skin of the character (is that you?)

The composition is perfect. Very interesting and symbolic the string that stitches the memory pieces together pointing to the head of the character. The same string of memory seems to take a slightly different form, below, the form of roots. Also symbolic, i would say. Also a good touch the different colors of the skies of the two cities. A wonderful detail the multitude of colors of the brick wall. Brings a special richness to the scene.

Thanks for your kind comments. Very useful for me to know what comes through to the viewer. This image came about after a relocation, and thus represents the breakage of the 'fabric of life' due to geographic/social changes. But it is just as relevant for any other breakups, conflicting commitments, reality vs dreams conflicts etc. No, the character is not me - I am no spring chicken. There is a self- portrait in my home page here, for those who are curious.

As a traditional artist as well as a Poser artist ... I really appreciate your explanation. You have a wonderful handle on the watercolors. They can be unpredictable and you've got good control. Also your modeling of the figure is excellent. I would suggest more shadowing and flow to link the different elements of the image together. But I do really like this piece.

Beautiful piece! I love the contrast between the new and the old with the two cities. You're very talented and it shows in your use of the brush and the watercolors to transfer your feelings and ideas from inside you to the paper. It's your techinques and comfort with your medium that brings life to your work.

I like the montage. The symbolism was lost on me until you explained it (but that's my fault for being a left-brained artist, not yours). You have my respect for having such control over an uncontrollable medium. Your self portrait is excellent, by the way!
