Description

I'm quite pleased with myself over the title on this one. It fits with my musical rhododendron theme, and the reason I'm posting it is to give you an idea of the size of some of the rhodys around here! I know this is not the most wonderful of photographs. Telephone wires, chain link fences, vehicles going by. But without those rather annoying elements, you wouldn't know how HUGE these bushes are! My purpose in posting this is purely illustrative. Not all rhodys are this big, of course. Most of them range between three and seven feet tall. (The small apricot-colored rhody in front of the big ones is much more normal.) This particular variety, with those hot pink blooms, gets quite large, and they are always just COVERED with flowers. So forgive me the non-beautiful indicators of scale, and just marvel at the sheer magnitude of these amazing rhododendrons!

This is so well done. You are exactly right about needing the other stuff in there for scale. I drove by the biggest ones I know of today, but I think these might be bigger. "Mine" are up to the roof of a two-story house. They were a bit past their prime, so I didn't shoot them. Wanna have some Rhody wars? LOL

Oooohh. A rhody war. Sounds like fun, my friend! We'll be famous. The War Of The Rhodys. (Didn't they already have one of those? Oh - perhaps it was roses. Never mind!) :)

I can't offer humungous rhodys but I have a really large oleander. Probably not on the scale of these rhodys and probably not the biggest ever seen, but my white oleander is at least 40 years old and is as tall as my house. It would be bigger but 6 years ago I trimmed it considerably when I realized we were having windstorms that were gusting around 60 mph. Since it was close to the house, I made sure it couldn't do any damage to shingles, gutters and wooden siding. These rhodys are spectacular!
