Description

a few months ago I put in two photos to be in a show for a judge and win a ribbon[hope] plus if some one wish to buy they can. I was told when I got there the judge did not want any photo manupution[misspelled sorry] He just want photos with very little work on it and that be the contrast. I bought two photos in that was a photo of a church and the Lake Martin bird shot both os in my gallery with high numbers of people looked at and place as a flavor. I was hopeing to win and sell. I got yelled at for the people knew me and they say it looks like every one else work. They wish to see my style of work; a little diff than the others. I was shock but I took what they say to heart. The show is over and I did not win. I know if I brought something like this the judge would not have looked at it. This is not my style here I was just playing around. I know a lot of people here on Rend. do a lot of post work and most is super. I pick up some photo magizines and they show what to do in photoshop to make your photo look good. Like clone out telephone lines or even a boat. to add stuff to it too. And it do look super like a photo that is real good. But stuff like this will never make it in the door. If you look at my early art I did do stuff like this. I even turn people into brick people. Wonder where the ideal comes from that it have to be super comeing out the camera and no post work. A.Adam never say that. If you get his book "The Print" you see all type of darkroom magic he did to get the images he took. He cut out mats and lay on the paper and counted up to 5 seconds before he took them off and then he did the rest of the photo with burns and dodge with it. He even had to paint on the print too. lol Lot of magic work bak then that photoshop made easy. I find most people will turn away when they see stuff like this. I do not understand? thanks for looking and comments

A shame about the narrow-minded judge, but don't take any notice and do your art YOUR WAY ! I like the postwork FX here, kool stuff ! ~Cheers~ :o)

First of all, anything castigating or derogatory said about Photoshop and/or postwork is either sheer hubris, blasphemy or just plain ignorance. If I couldn't do postwork on my stuff I wouldn't even bother taking pictures and/or posting them anywhere. I see tons of stuff out there that are in dire need of manipulation. I say bring it out of the shadows! POSTWORK RULES!

I guess Jocko, that some photography shows are for purists .. they only want untouched photos, straight from the camera. My feeling is that we have all these wonderful tools to do wonderful things, there should be different categories at photography shows. That way those of that like manipulated photos have some place to show our work too, and to hopefully sell some pieces. Personally, I like both. Often I take a wonderful photo, and find there is too much sun, or not enough light, and boy, it's great that I can play with them and make something wonderful, even from a bad shot. I love this one you did here, it adds a an extra touch of pizzazz! I think it's wonderful.

Yo Jocko thanx for your comment! I dropped out for a couple of years and am glad to see that you are still here. Like your photos, and on this one the way you posterized part of your scene. I drive for a living and always carry a camera and can relate to your passion. Take care db

I have been thinking of making a green 1954 Olsmobile hardtop that the son of the portrait tinter at the local photographers drove. He once customized it by taking off the globe on the front and filling the bolt holes left with balsa wood he painted with touchup paint. Now that we have seen Turner Classics tinted from black and whites the genre has hit the big screen. She used no codes to capture the colors when the portraits were taken. It was in her own mind that the retouch and remaster occured. Yet only when her hand put brush to image did the fantasy reappear as reality. Her son was not her student.

I like it, JOcko. It reminds me of the Southern Comfort TV ads that are manipulated photos and videos of real people put together in a sort of a collage. I bet the guys that made the ad made big bucks on it, too. Some judges are just jerks.

There are contests that not only allow photo manipulation, but are For photo manipulation. This would be a great entry!

Jocko, a very nice writeup with ideas from the heart of a true artist that our usre to help me and anyone with an open mind. Myself, I really like the way you have combined the vividly solarized background couple dancing with the "as captured" lady in the foreground, it is creative, effective, and gives us veiwers two photos/focus points in one artwork. Excellent!
