Description

The history of Lincoln begins at Brayford Pool, a natural harbour on the River Witham. There was an Iron-Age settlement here as early as 100BC, known as "Lindun", or "The place by the pool". When the Romans invaded England they recognised the strategic importance of the place and established a garrison. They renamed the city "Lindum", and later "Lindum Colonia", from which derives our modern name of "Lincoln". Lincoln Cathedral which you see in the background, boasts an impressive central tower, the tallest in the country after Salisbury at 81 metres (approximately 250 feet). But this lofty finger of stone pales before the memory of the original tower, which rose twice as high before toppling in a storm in 1547. I had a wonderful day touring the old streets and shops more to show later..

Well, as a girl who's been about a bit, geographically speaking, I can say that I lived in Lincoln, well, in an outlying village, but I worked in Lincoln so know the city very well and you have captured the cathedral beautifully. The POV is great as it also shows the old narrow, steep streets that surround the cathedral area. Great shot Danny, a little trip down memory lane for me, which has left me with a nostalgic warmth now - thank you! xx

it is so amazing to me to hear someone talk about something being built more than 150 years ago. Our country is so new in comparison to the rest of the world and we do seem to love to tear things down faster than we are to maintain or restore them. This is such a quaint and lovely veiw!

Wonderful place to explore. I think I will go in and have some 'goodies'. The tower and the stone structures are so great. Things made these days don't last as long. Thanks for this and the bit of history. Looking forward to more.

The Encyclopedia Britannica of 1959 had a picture of Lincoln cathedral with two tall wooden spires, one of which had it's top knocked off in a lightning strike in the middle ages. I no longer can find these pictures. London burned in a great fire which only St. Paul's survived as a ruin. This view could date to 1600 and has inset windows in brick that became code and no overhanging fronts that were outlawed after the fire.

My eye goes right to that little green sign. Lovely shot, Dan. The soft blue sky adds a lot to the feel of this.
