This looks very similar to the Digger Wasp found on the following web page... http://www.whatsthatbug.com/wasps.html Could be the same. In any event, its a doozy! Great shot.

...think it's a flying ant species...laying eggs would be typical for them...if you get the chance,or already have...a side shot would be equally cool!

It belongs to the wasp family, just not to the yelllow jacket kind, unfortunately its name escapes me. The good news is that it is a benificial insect with a Japanese sounding name. Thank you for sharing. egmont
