Description
Another 10/30/06 capture of the F/A-18 while taxing down the runway after landing during the Auto/Copter Expo show held annually at the beautiful Armed Forces Reserve Center in beautiful Los Alamitos, California. This is the same show that featured the 1912 Ford I posted a while back.
This is from a zoom shot taken at quite a distance away, the F/A-18 being originally less than half the size of the one shown above. I'm surprised it held up so well in the enlargement. Also, the aircraft in the original was quite dark because of backlighting at that distance. Remedy to all this: good old dependable Photoshop, God's gift to mankind.
Some statistics:
Type - single-seat fighter and strike aircraft
Powerplant - two 7264kg (16,000lb) General Electric F404-GE-400 turbofans
Performance - maximum speed at 12,190m (40,000ft) 1912km/h (1183mph); combat ceiling 15,240m (50,000 ft); combat radius 1065km (662 miles)
Weights - empty 10,455kg (23,050lb); maximum take-off 25,401kg (56,000lb)
Armament - one 20mm M61A1 Vulcan rotary cannon with 570 rounds; nine external hardpoints with provision for up to 7711kg (17,000lb) of stores, including air-to-air missiles, air-to-surface missiles, anti-ship missiles, free-fall or guided bombs, cluster bombs, dispenser weapons, napalm tanks, rocket launchers, drop tanks and ECM pods.
In other words, one mean, hard, and fast sucker.
Thanks for the look-see, and I hope the ladies didn't nod off during the detailed narrative.

Well, first of all, I'm amazed this is a single-seater. I would think with its diverse capibilities and size it would have accommodated 2 but perhaps for speed and maneuverability, one was a better idea. Really cool shot!

I admit I skimmed. But I did NOT nod off! I, too, am surprised that it only seats one. It seems logical to me that one person would fly the aircraft and one person would act as gunner. "Throwing the bomb," as it were. (That would be much like dropping ordnance.) Nice shot!
