Description

Well, rhododendron season is about over, girls and boys! The flowers are turning brown and dropping to the ground, leaving little clusters of stems and stamens that will either be left on the bush or picked off, depending on one's approach to such things. The plant doesn't care - it's purely aesthetics. The picking off of these little leftovers is called "deadheading." It's very sticky work if done early in the summer. As time goes by, however, the stickiness goes away. If you leave them all year, by next summer they'll be dry, brown and brittle. I hope you've enjoyed this selection of rhododendron blossoms - I had a great time putting it together!

So are you going to deadhead all the Rhodies in your neighborhood? I've always heard that the plant will have more and better blooms the next year if it's deadheaded this year. I think it's your civic duty, frankly. This is another fine shot of another beautiful blossom, Tara. A fine way to end the series.

It has been a wonderful series Tara. I got a kick out of Cosine's comment. Your civic duty after lurking throughout the neighborhood stealing captures of Rhodies. You are now officially on deadhead patrol....oh no, that just lead me down a completely different path...LOL Loved all these Rhodies my dear, you did them justice :)

Such a wonderful flower and we have had no luck with ours this year - it never even tried to blossom (something to do with the clay in our soil perhaps!!?) You are very knowledgeable on such things and I've enjoyed this series and will look forward to the next with anticipation. Great colours on this final bloom. xx

Beautiful shot. In my garden they'd wait until next summer and become brown and brittle... Lol

I would say this is your best rhododendron as there are no direct highlights only wonderful graydations of light, allowing the rhododendron to sine in all its glory. Thank you for sharing. egmont
