Description

This is a trailing snapdragon, according to Ann, who knows these things. I took this picture at her place when I was out there a while ago. She had it under lights in the garage while it was getting established, so we took it outside and put it on the hood of her car to take the photos. Of course I didn't ask what this was at the time, so when I was looking at the images I ended up with, I had to call Ann to identify it for me over the phone. I described it: Trailing habit, like a vine. Oval leaves, sort of fuzzy. Pink and white blossoms, kind of a cross between an orchid and a snapdragon. After much discussion, we decided the ID would have to wait until next time I came over, and I could look around and find the plant. She had no recollection of ever having seen anything like what I was describing, and was pretty much convinced one of us was looney! Oval leaves with fuzz? Nope - no such thing that you would find in this area. The next time I went over, we discussed it again, and walked around trying to find the plant. (No easy task, I assure you! She pretty much has one of everything.) All of a sudden she stopped, and said, "Oh I know what it is! It's a trailing snapdragon, and it's right over here." And there it was. Plant ID complete.

Great story Tara, I got such a kick out it. And another one of my favorite plants. Snapdragons are almost human sometimes, besides I just love the name ;) This is a beautiful shot!

Wonderful capture of the trailing snapdragon, Tara! Besides the color mauve, I like the dark veins running through the petals. If you can tolerate the analogy, they remind me of the varicose veins I often see on either the legs of various people brave or foolish enough to walk around in shorts, or the skin on the face of alcoholics.
