Description
Captured 10/30/06 at the Los Alamitos Auto/Copter Expo Show held annually at the beautiful Armed Forces Reserve Center in beautiful Los Alamitos, California.
In preparation for the upcoming Father's Day holiday next Sunday, I'm taking this opportunity to present some real he-man macho stuff, befitting any father, in commemoration of the yearly event.
Ah yes, lovely to look at, but, actually, my first thought was to photograph a necktie.
The M48 Patton was one of the U.S Army's principal main battle tanks of the Cold War, with models in service from the early 1950s to the 1990s. The M48 was the U.S. Army and Marine Corps primary tank during the Vietnam War. It was widely used by U.S. Cold War allies, especially other NATO countries. The tank belongs to the Patton family of tanks, named after General George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. Third Army during World War II and one of the earliest American advocates for the use of tanks in battle. It was a further development of the M47 Patton tank.
The M48 Patton tank was designed to replace the previous M47 Pattons and M4 Shermans. Although largely resembling the M47, the M48 Patton was a completely new tank design despite a rough similarity from a distance. Some M48A5 models served well into the 80s. Internationally, many various M48 Patton models remain in service.
Further details to follow on this vehicle.
Have a good one.

The only tank I have any sort of familiarity with is the Sherman tank - thanks to my dad's mutterings when I was young. :-) Good shot of the tank, and feel free to post a necktie anywhere along the way during your Salute to Dads.

Well, as an ex-servicewoman myself, married to an ex-serviceman and also sister to two ex paratroopers....... I have seen many tanks along my travels however, I have never seen a Patton of any number and this is definitely a "manly" tank quite suitably fitting for Father's Day, which, unlike Mother's Day, seems to fall on or around the same date as ours here in UK!! This is a lovely capture and I am trying desperately to refrain from making comments about the size of gun/canon/weapon you have put out on display for us!!! Hugs. xx

With your postwork, it almost looks like a model. Fantabulous job here, and thanks for the trivia!

I'm quite impressed that you "captured" this big, powerful tank all by yourself! Nice work!

I had the thrill of driving one of these behemoths! They break down often and after fixing it, I had to test drive it. It was a singularly thrilling ride as it was older than me! Rather like fixing model T Ford, and getting it to run. Since my kids always gift me on Father's Day as well as Mother's day I thank you. BJ
