Description
Captured 10/30/06 at the Los Alamitos Auto/Copter Expo Show held annually at the beautiful Armed Forces Reserve Center in beautiful Los Alamitos, California.
Continuing with my macho salute to good ol' Dad on the upcoming Father's Day, here is further information on the intrepid vehicle displayed above:
When the Korean War began, the US military had no medium tanks in production. The M47 appeared as an interim measure but work immediately began on the M48. The first Pattons were completed in July 1952. The speed of development resulted in numerous teething problems for the early Pattons, including poor reliability and a short operating range. A modified version was designed to rectify these failings, and the tank served successfully in Vietnam, India and with the Israelis in the Middle East.
Data:
Crew: 4
Weight: 103,488lb/47,040kg
Range: 288 miles/463km
Armor: 0.5-4.72in/12.7-120mm
Armament: one 90mm gun; one 7.62mm coaxial machine gun; one 12.7mm machine gun in commander's cupola.
Powerplant: one Continental AVDS-1790-2A 12-cylinder diesel engine developing 750hp (560kW)
Performance: maximum road speed 30mph/48.2km/h; fording 4ft/1.219m; vertical obstacle 3ft/0.915m; trench 8ft 6in/2.59m.
I'm confident the ladies skimmed over, and the men memorized, every detail listed above.
Oops, almost forgot, the background was blurred for more tank impact.
Have an enormously pleasant upcoming weekend!

Wow, impressive weapons - the kind that leave nice holes. :-) I bet the sound they make discharging is memorable too. At 30 mph your almost at cruise speed. Amazing something the weighs over 51 1/2 tons can move like that! And I really didn't know they could ford so that is something I learned as well. So, now that I've skimmed over your information, I think I'll tell you that this is a great shot and I love the pov. It really shows off its design well. And nice postwork.

Cool - I used to have a RC M48A5 which was really useful for crushing other kids toy cars :}

LOL...skimmed a bit, but remember the canon size and a speed and range...the rest is secondry in battle. Great shot from this angle.I know it is "keep off teritory" but can you access it inside?

Now Harry, you know I read EVERY word. I have very little recollection of what I read, but I didn't skim. Without looking, I remember the following: This is a photo of a tank. Patton, not Sherman. M48. 30mph. Trench 8-1/2 feet. PJ is amazed it weighs 51-1/2 tons and goes so fast. There is a sign in front of the tank that says "Keep Off." It's gray. Big guns. Mmmmmm . . . maybe three of them, measured in various numbers of millimeters. How'd I do?

Israelis used then in the 6 day war and won. cool shot here

Wonderful capture with great light. I hate to be picky, but I think we are looking at an M47, here. The M47 and M48 shared the name "Patton." M48s had a rounder turret and M47 turrets were leaner. M48s also have rounded front hull while the M47 was straight.

Buffalo, thanks for the correction. I had no reference to tell one from the other.

Excellent composition in this one Harry. The blurring of the background has certainly emphasised the details of the mighty weapon on this wonderful tank. Great shooting (no pun intended....oh well, maybe a little!!!) xxx
