Description

Everyone in the forest knows it's not really summer until the Summer Solstice and the Fortune Teller does her summer dance down by the lesser pond when the moon is high and full. If you take the South path, not the South east path, it is too long and winds through the brambles. You want to be in good shape when you arrive at the lesser pond and get there by midnight. When traveling the South path however, there is a slight problem. Some of the older fairies who live in the Forest dislike interlopers who come to gawk at their special events. Even the elves who live in the village on the edge of forest are begrudgingly invited. For others they set honey traps all along the paths. The South path is less traveled and has fewer honey traps, but they are there. The honey traps are big leaves covered in honey and strewn along the paths. The idea is that if you step on a honey trap it will stick to your foot and you have to stop and get it off, which I have been told is not as easy as you might think. This takes time and eventually you get tired of de-leafing your feet and leave the Forest. There are more elaborate honey traps on the other paths where they attach huge leaves covered in honey to vines with Fairy hair triggers. As you go by they go off and before you know, you have been 'plopped' right in the face and hair with honey. Very clever and ingenious, but very messy and sticky and takes forever to get it all off. Once you have arrived at the lesser pond you will see a clearing with an old rock wall. Hide behind the wall near the cattails and be very very quiet. You will see Esmerelda, the Fortune Teller dressed in her beautiful summer attire dancing in the moonlight weaving her magical spells with Wisteria scented Fairy dust and chanting a beautifully melody to insure a wonderful, fruitful and safe summer in the Forest. Afterward there will be parties all through the Forest with sweet Petal juice and exotic confections Esmeralda had shipped from far off places. Now, of course I have never seen this for myself, but I am told, if you listen, you just may hear the laughter and giggling of the Fairies and if you are really lucky the sweet chanting of Esmerelda and the swishing of her silk dress or it could be just the breeze again through the trees. Oh my gosh! I saw her dancing with the wee folk in the meadow, just beyond the Hollow! My husband thought it was just a boatload of firelflies, but I knew better, it was the wee folk, dancing and celebrating with her. Woe unto him who does not believe ... giggles!

Its all too easy to get distracted by the honey traps, I gather. What's the secret for pressing on, especially if you don't really know what's at the end of the path? Lovely story and surprise at the end of the path.
