Description

I had such a profound reaction to my first post on June 22, I'm taking it upon myself to go Diane Arbus on you again and upload another shot I took on 6/19/07 at about 7:15 AM of a lady sleeping on a grass divider that separates a large gas station from the sidewalk that is adjacent to a very busy intersection, especially at that time of the morning. The gas station is toward the top of the image, the street toward the bottom. She was there when I left the scene, and was still there when I returned about 50 minutes later. I assume she is homeless, but, as you can see, her clothes and stuff appear in pretty good shape, with no faded colors, patches, holes or rips that I could detect. And, she wasn't waiting while her car was being repaired, because the station offers only gas/petrol, air, water, snack food, and nothing else. This is the last photo I'm posting of this individual, unless, of course, I see her again under similar circumstances. Have a prolific work week, and enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.

The way she is balled up here with the hint of a dirty hand give this one even more impact than the last.

I work for a non-profit company who owns apartments targetted for low-income folks...I manage a property that is aimed at homeless folks. It's called an SRO (Single Room Occupancy)...Us, the housing authority for our area and HUD all pitch in to try and help homeless folks get housing...My property has 52 units that are always full...SRO buildings are closing down at an alarming rate due to lack of funding and homelessness is rising even faster... Something needs to be done FAST!!

42n8: "All these pics" was actually just two pics. I was there for about 60 seconds and wasn't about to awaken her from her slumber.

With the rapid elimination of the middle class, we will see more and more homeless families in America. Social services are for the poor and the rich don't need help so the people in the middle who can't pay the mortgage or have to make a decision whether to pay the bills or feed the family will be out on the street in great numbers if we don't find a way to slow or reduce prices across the board. I started my first job making $1.72 an hour and pretty pleased to be making that much and supporting a family of 3 on it. Now I make about 20 times that, still support 3 people, and I'm losing ground every month.

I'm with Kort on this one, this definitely has more impact than the first one with the dirt/bruising showing on her hand. You did right not to disturb her from her sleep - she's probably a very proud lady who wouldn't take too kindly to being questioned, if she wanted yours or anybody else's help, I'm sure she would ask. Great reportage (if that's the correct word??) photography Harry. You did good my friend. xx

wonder why her hand is so red? she got burn or is it her health? My son stop one time and wake up a man that was sleeping on the side of the road. He never going to do that again. He was checking to see if he was ok. He just passed out there from drinking too much wine.

Good shot Harry. The "peeking" hand gives more life to this picture. Where I live in a big village, we don't see homeless on a street they been collected and taken to the shelter every night.

From what I could see, the condition of her hand appeared to be from old age and/or sun exposure.
