Description

These signs are everywhere around here. (Of course they don't all say "Lunds Gulch!") Does anyone think they're as funny as I do? I'm about 5'4" tall. I just got out of my car and walked over to the sign, which is clearly above my head, and took the picture from a standing position. Never seen a fish that high up in the air. Never seen a fish on the road. No little fishy crossing guards with dripping wet crossing flags. Never. To the best of my knowledge, the creek runs UNDER the road, and the fish swim in the water there in perfect safety. What is it, exactly, that I need to know about this event while I'm driving down the road? (The fish silhouette is a salmon, for those of you keeping track at home.) I see dead possums and squirrels by the side of the road on a pretty regular basis, but I have never, ever, in my whole entire life seen fish roadkill. Maybe it's just me - I admit to having a bit of an odd sense of humor, but the Snohomish County Public Works Department (Washington State) has clearly spent a lot of money having these signs made and putting them up, and it just strikes me as being a bit . . . well, . . . weird! Somebody decided that we needed these things. Somebody else agreed. What elaborate process must have been conceived and executed in order for these signs to have been erected! The mind boggles.

It makes as much sense as a little town out here putting in tunnels under their roads so the toads can migrate for mating season without being squashed on the road... Love it!

How bizarre! I did some Googling and found a few references, but no explanation. Someone suggested they might be there because of potential flooding, but I don't see why anyone would make that connection. I found a county financial statement noting that they cost a bit over $1600, but it didn't say for how many. Interesting and thought-provoking photo, Tara. Thanks for sharing.

Hmmmm, a very handsome sign, indeed, but, like you, I must ask isn't this going a bit overboard on fish protection (no pun intended)? Admittedly, dead slimy fish on the road could create somewhat of a traffic hazard -- nothing like screeching to a halt on top of the squishy remains of an ichthyoid creature(s). Then again, there are fish that can walk on dry land, and there are also flying fish. So, one never knows, does one? Anyway, fine POV, clarity, and beautiful blue colors in this remarkable capture, Tara!

Now we are hoping we can find one of these today...it would be sooooo much easier than actually "fishing" for fish...LOL Love this Tara and your sense of humor. I am writing our parks and recs department as I comment..;) Hugs,
