Description
When I was a boy,we used to play in a huge trenchlike cavity running parallel with our street. Nothing would grow in it and it always smelled funny. Eventually I learned that this trench was actually a series of connecting bomb craters made by a Zeppelin during a night raid on a nearby steelworks during World War One.
Apparently, mere mention of the word 'Zeppelin' was enough create fear in the hearts of the people who lived nearby, out of all proportion to the amount of damage caused. People would hear the sound of the engines above the clouds without actually seeing the airship and then bombs would apparently fall from nowhere. The bomb aimer was usually suspended below the clouds, communicating with the ship above by telephone once they were over the target. Scary to say the least!

Yeah, it seems hard to realize that the zepplins were originally used for bombing as well as for observations.
