Description

Heath Fritillary (Mellicta athalia or Melitaea athalia) in Dutch : Bosparelmoervlinder in French : Damier athalie-Mélitée du Mélampyre Heath Fritillary is not listed on the IUCN Red List (International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, 2006), suggesting that globally it is not considered threatened... In the UK, however, the species was "considered to be the most endangered British butterfly" after a nationwide survey in 1980 found only 31 surviving colonies. Consequently, it was given protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Despite subsequent widespread efforts to conserve and manage the species' habitats, it has continued to decline... Therefore I'd like to dedicate my macro to our dear Forum Moderator, Danny (danob), a great photographer and defender of wildlife (see "Saving Planet Earth" ), especially butterflies (see "Extinct?" ) ! This picture was taken on June 7th, along the "sentier botanique" of the Chartreuse de Valbonne (France - Gard) Thank you Danny for helping me with the name of the green fly uploaded yesterday :
