Description

This is the head of a Roman sculpture in the museum in Tarragona, Spain. I live nearby. It struck me how strong a resemblance the plants on his wreath are to a local bush that grows everywhere here. In fact I have such a plant in my garden. The leaf is also the same shape and the stems are very pliable and easy to make into a wreath although a bit rough on the skin. I wonder if this is the actual plant that Romans here used for decoration? You can see the flower I have superimposed is very similar to the stone carving. What do you think?

I think you have done just great with this Rozanne. Sculptures always fascinate me and I love how you have superimposed the flower. It fits so snugly on the carving. A great shot!

Definitely is the same flower... at least imho. The roman influence, including the name Tarraco Nova is documented from the century I a.C. That head is a gem. Very interesting Rozanne. Superb work !

So beautiful. I love the colors, but I'm afraid I haven't a clue about the flowers. This sculpture is so powerful and impressive. Excellent work, Rozanne. Hugs, Suzanne

It looks 'awfy' like it, Rozanne. If the sculture was carved locally, then it would be much easier for the sculptor to use floral decorations he/she was already familiar with. I am sure that you could colour the head ( on a separate layer(s) ) using your art program of choice, and of course your treasured WACOM stylus and tablet. My daughter, and youngest son, once shaded in stark black and white photocopies of Nativity paintings using coloured pencils, and achieved one of those 'happy accidents' as they 'warmed' the scene with light. Regards, John.
