Description

Just finished working on my second submarine - the 941 Akula (Typhoon class) Russian nuclear sub, the largest in the world. Here it's heading out to sea, and will soon vanish from sight as it descends into the cold, dark depths of the ocean.

Super Cool! But is the water a photo? If not, then I would love to know how you did it.

I don't believe that is Bryce, It's definately a photgraph. A seriously realistic scene, and I would love to know your secret with the waves. 10/5 and a 'WoW!' to go with it.

Wow! You've done a SUPERB job with the water! I assume the bow-wave is a shaped terrain? The only thing that gives it away is a very slight change in the bumpiness of the materials... But a bloody BRILLIANT job!

Did you composite the 3D sub into an existing photo of a sub on the surface? If not, the bow-wave and wake are very well done. Even if you composited the model into the photo, it is also well done....

Sorry to disappoint some of you, but there is no photo involved here... it's all CG. The water is basically the same water I used for years... very flat terrains. The wake is also terrains. Much of the foam, however, is old fashioned manual post work (dog work), since Bryce doesn't have a 'make foam' button. If it wasn't for endless tweaking of texture and light it would be quite easy to do. Rendered from another angle, this water texture might look simply awful, so every scene has to be tweaked just right... there is no simple one-step solution that I know of.
