Description
The Supernova-class battleship arguably won the Sex War, but it risks losing the peace. Following the Surrender, the victorious females wanted to cash in their "peace dividend". A wartime Supernova accommodated a full Stellar Legion, which it could teleport with extreme accuracy on to planetary targets; it also held support weapons and the equipment required for fairly sophisticated terraforming, to repair the worst effects of the fighting.
By the time of the Surrender, a Supernova was, to female eyes, starting to look a bit archaic. With the "end of history", though, not to mention the birth of "the New Galactic Order", it was hard to justify replacing these warships. At the same time, most veterans of the Stellar Legions naturally returned to civilian life, after achieving victory. The average Supernova crew is only three per cent of its wartime complement. Some are down to one per cent. The soldiers' superior armaments and individual powers are expected to compensate.
The problem is that the triumphant women have been far too generous with their secrets, sharing them freely with societies which, while no less feminist, share none of the Sex Warriors' basic ideals. The males never cracked teleportation, but the new potential enemies have had it handed to them on a plate - and an outdated Supernova-class starship has no defence against teleported assault-troops. Defending a peace-time Supernova proves much more of a headache than it ever was in the Sex War.
