Description

Today I visited the city of Antwerp in Belgium. This is an 12th Century castle which also has been used as a prison. It is called Het Steen which litteraly means 'The Stone', but it is obvious that castle is meant in this case. It is located on the banks of the river Schelde. As far as I know castles very rarely can be found in the middle of a medium sized city. Many castles in Europe are situated on a mountain not far from a city or a village but - and I repeat- very rarely in the heart of the city itselfs.

Thank you for your comments on my yesterday's clouds posting, thumb_1482824.jpgI love those clouds

What a beautiful castle. I like the plants growing on it and I like the bushes you let come with the scenery. Bravo for a lovely shot.

Beautiful pov. You've managed to take us down the stone path to the doors with your pov and that's great. A nice full shot of this castle and with that you'be gotten a splash of color and a beautiful blue sky.

Yeah.. You should go to Leiden (not only do they have a "Gravensteen" (the count's stone), but also a primitive Castle structure in the middle of town, The Hague in the Netherlands It would change your mind :) Once there was a castle in Amsterdam, in London.. There are still ruins in Schiedam.. grin Oh and there is the Castle of Breda.. with the military accademy in it. Welcome to the low lands.. No mountains .. still castles.. Great photo I am going to be in Antwerp this weekend. I hope to see the Castle

Excellent picture. But "steen" in this sense means "castle" rather than "stone". Of course the Antwerp Steen pales in comparison to the "Gravensteen" (Castle of the Count) in Ghent. :)
